The back yard was largely shaded on all sides and drainage was almost non-existent. In addition to this challenge, the local water company had staked claim to an easement on the property and installed a sewer main which ran from the street right through the homeowner's yard to the back property line.

Drainage was a huge problem. No subterranean pipes had been laid before the concrete walkway was poured and water from the roof drains (carried by the ADS flex lines shown above) ran straight into the back yard and formed a muddy lake each winter.
